Entry guidance:

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Grade 4 or above in English Language. In addition, you should have the interest in researching an area or designing an artefact and an interest in learning how to carry out academic research.

The EPQ is studied alongside chosen A level and vocational subjects. It carries UCAS points, is graded from A*- E and is equivalent to an AS level.  It is highly regarded by universities and can lead to students obtaining lower university offers.

What is the EPQ?

In simple terms, it is a BIG, INDEPENDENT project for which you will earn a qualification in project management.

In most cases it involves researching and writing a 5000 word essay or creating an artefact, e.g. a piece of art, a book, a play, a dance, a robot, a dress, an investigation…

What can my project be about?

Pretty much anything within reason, but these are agreed with our centre coordinators before you really get started.  All of the projects must be research based and have clear aims and objectives outlining the purpose of the project.

Some example project titles from our centre:

• Can Pablo Picassio be considered the most influential artist of the 20th century?
• What is the most significant development in F1 head safety in the last 30 years?
• Is fast fashion acceptable?
• How successful have wildlife corridors been in reversing species decline in tigers and elephants?
• Create a robotic arm
• Simulate the formation of a black hole using Blender

Why do one?

• An opportunity to learn about something you would NEVER otherwise study at school
• Practising skills in research, independent working and essay writing ready for university/work
• Looks good on your personal statement or CV
• Makes you stand out
• Projects are very personal and gives you plenty to talk about in interviews
• Your project may link to a course you wish to study further at university
• Some universities will contextualise their offer and let you on the course with one grade lower if you get a B or above in EPQ.
