SOCIOLOGY CURRICULUM INTENT

The sociology curriculum at Sackville aims to develop our students’ critical understanding of the diverse, globalised and fast-changing world in which they are growing up. We equip students with the knowledge and skills to progress on to related sixth-form and undergraduate courses, apprenticeships and careers, with the aim of fostering a lifelong love of learning through the social sciences.

SOCIOLOGY CURRICULUM RATIONALE

Through carefully sequenced learning, students acquire:

• a keen sociological imagination, with an ability to observe, investigate and analyse human society & behaviour from a variety of perspectives, and
• a confident understanding of research methods and sources of data, with the ability to apply them to a range of social issues.

This is achieved through a spiral curriculum in which students are introduced to key concepts, theories and methods early in the course. They then regularly revisit them to retrieve knowledge and deepen their understanding, by applying it to the topics explored through the GCSE and A level specifications and to real-world examples.

 

CRIMINOLOGY CURRICULUM INTENT

The criminology curriculum at Sackville aims to equip students with the theoretical, conceptual and practical skills to progress on to related undergraduate courses, apprenticeships and eventually careers which will place them at the forefront of understanding and combating the drivers of crime, giving voice and agency to victims and ensuring that justice is served fairly.

CRIMINOLOGY CURRICULUM RATIONALE

The criminology curriculum at Sackville combines:

• a rigorous knowledge-base, drawing on theories, concepts and evidence from sociology, psychology and law to understand the drivers and impacts of criminality; and
• the cognitive and practical skills to apply this knowledge to real-world cases, scenarios and policy-making.

This is achieved through the regular retrieval and application of key knowledge and understanding  gained early in the course, which is then revisited in later units, enabling students to make the synoptic links needed to achieve the higher grades.
