Welcome to the Sackville School Masters of Knowledge hub. This guide outlines how our daily retrieval practice routine works, why it is essential for long-term learning, and how you can support your child at home. You will also find answers to all frequently asked questions raised by parents and carers.
Masters of Knowledge is our standardised home learning system for Year 7. Rather than setting ad-hoc or irregular homework, MoK builds a consistent, daily paper-based routine focused on cognitive science principles - specifically retrieval practice and spaced repetition. On these sheets are clear questions identifying the core substantive knowledge students need to master in each of their subjects. By spending 30 minutes each evening testing themselves on these key facts, students lock foundational knowledge into their long-term memory, boosting confidence in class and reducing exam anxiety.
The Student MoK Kit (Clear Plastic Wallet)
Every Year 7 student is provided with a clear plastic wallet containing:
Our Masters of Knowledge system connects home learning directly to classroom practice and assessment through three core pillars:
|
Pillar |
Where & When |
Purpose & Action
|
|
1. Homework |
30 minutes daily at home (Mon–Fri) |
Consolidation of Knowledge: Self-quizzing using Look-Say-Cover-Write-Check in Mastery Booklets. |
|
2. Classroom 'Do Now' & Ambition mornings |
Morning registration & lesson starters |
Knowledge Retrieval: Tutor booklet audits, mini-whiteboard retrieval practice in Ambition Briefings, and lesson starter quizzes. |
|
3. Mastery knowledge checks |
Once per half-term in subject lessons |
Is Knowledge Secure?: Low-stakes assessments to verify long-term memory retention across subjects. |
Students complete 30 minutes of self-quizzing per night (Monday to Friday) in their Mastery Booklet using the 5-step LSCWC routine:

In addition to the physical copies in your child’s plastic wallet, digital copies of all subject Mastery Sheets are available to view and download below:
For students who wish to challenge themselves further, we have provided optional Ambition Challenges which are all linked to our core values. These extension tasks contain challenge elements designed to help students stretch their understanding, deepen subject mastery, and earn additional Golden Tickets for the Ambition Wall!

Students complete 30 minutes total per night (Monday to Friday). This is split flexibly across subjects—e.g., 2 subjects for 15 minutes each, or 3 subjects for 10 minutes each. (Note: Sparx Maths and Sparx Reader are separate weekly online tasks as normal).
All written practice and green-pen self-corrections are completed in their single physical Mastery Booklet. The Mastery Sheets are reference question sheets. Stamps for completed work are added to their Ambition Card.
Beyond the weekly morning registration audits by tutors, subject teachers reactivate this knowledge in lessons through starter 'Do Now' activities, low-stakes quizzes, mini-whiteboard practice, and half-termly Mastery knowledge Checks.
Form tutors check the Mastery Booklet once per week in registration. Students self-mark their work at home in green pen prior to tutor checks.
Form tutors award stamps on student Ambition Cards. Once the card is complete, they bring the card to community who issue them with a new ambition card, 10 achievement points and a golden ticket.. Golden Tickets are entered into the collection box at our central Ambition Wall (which is located outside the main student entrance) for weekly and termly prize draws (vouchers, custom enamel pins, branded MoK pens, bookmarks, and Headteacher invites).
Focus on praising effort, routine, and green-pen corrections rather than expecting 100% accuracy right away. Green-pen corrections show active learning! Establishing a fixed 30-minute quiet study routine after school turns retrieval practice into an effortless habit.
Due to our initial setup grace period at the start of term, students are currently working on Week 4&5 in their Mastery Sheets up to the half-term break. After half term, MoK week numbers align directly with standard school calendar weeks. Updates are also shared via ClassCharts announcements.
Ambition Briefings are year-group assemblies led by Senior Leadership. They celebrate student achievement, model retrieval techniques on mini-whiteboards, reinforce standards, and build cohort pride.
You don't need subject expertise to support your child! Follow these 3 easy steps:
There is no single, compulsory timetable enforced by the school. We intentionally leave this flexible so students can balance their 30-minute daily self-quizzing around after-school clubs, sports, and family commitments. Students simply need to complete 30 minutes total per night (Monday to Friday), choosing either 2 subjects for 15 minutes or 3 subjects for 10 minutes.
Example 1: Student A (2 Subjects per Night @ 15 Minutes Each)
This option is ideal for students who prefer spending a bit more time diving into fewer subjects per evening. Because 2 subjects a night yields 10 study slots per week, core subjects are completed weekly while foundation subjects alternate across a two-week rotation:
|
Day |
Subject 1 (15 mins) |
Subject 2 (15 mins) |
|
Monday |
English |
Maths |
|
Tuesday |
Science (e.g., Biology / Chemistry / Physics) |
Geography |
|
Wednesday |
History |
Languages (e.g., French / Spanish / German) |
|
Thursday |
Art |
Digital Studies |
|
Friday |
D&T (e.g., DT / Food / Textiles rotation) |
Music |
Note for Week B: On alternate weeks, Thursday and Friday slots swap in B&V (Beliefs & Values), Drama, and PE to ensure full coverage across the fortnightly cycle.
Example 2: Student B (3 Subjects per Night @ 10 Minutes Each)
This option suits students who prefer quick, high-variety recall sessions. Completing 3 subjects a night yields 15 study slots per week, allowing a student to cover every single subject in the school curriculum within a single week (with core subjects like Maths and English repeated):
|
Day |
Subject 1 (10 mins) |
Subject 2 (10 mins) |
Subject 3 (10 mins) |
|
Monday |
English |
